Customer Feature: Home Construction for Aging in Place a Growing Trend

Today, there are more than 46 million adults age 65 and older living in the U.S. By 2050, that number is expected to grow to almost 90 million. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, within the next decade one in every five residents will be retirement age. People are living longer than ever, and more of them want to remain able to live in their own homes as long as possible. Forward-thinking adults and builders are working together to create homes that are designed to achieve this goal. Long-time Harbin customer Sandstone Custom Homes recently completed their latest home designed for Aging in Place for a couple relocating to be closer to their family. The exterior of the two-story with full basement home is built to be very low maintenance without sacrificing style or quality. A combination of brick, stone, concrete siding, vinyl windows, vinyl shutters, and fiberglass doors used on the residence are aesthetically pleasing in their design while requiring little to no upkeep. Stepping inside the beautiful home, it’s not immediately noticeable that the home was designed for wheelchair accessibility, decreased mobility or that it includes safety features in place in the event a resident develops cognitive impairment such as dementia. Upon closer inspection, there are hundreds of adjustments that were made to accommodate any number of age-related impairments that might eventually be present. Beginning in the entryway, the eye is drawn to gleaming wood floors. But those floors are engineered hardwood, and that’s because...

Customer Feature: A Vacation Inspired Family Retreat

The Paynes are the epitome of the American dream.  They married young and began their family, while living in a mobile home and building their own business.  Many years of dedication, countless hours of hard work, and quite a few blessings later, their business was taking off and they were planning for the future.  The couple purchased some wooded property off the beaten path, with plans to eventually build their forever home some day.  More years of hard work and saving, and the family was ready to begin their dream home.  The family approached choosing their builder with the same careful consideration as they approached everything else up until now.  After many recommendations and interviews, they chose Mark Palmer Construction. Mark Palmer was the perfect fit to help the Paynes make their dream a reality.  Mark meticulously managed every aspect of the home build, personally hand crafting many of the elements in the home, and leaving no detail unattended to.  He worked closely with the Paynes every step of the way to ensure they received the dream home they had always wanted. While the Paynes wanted a log cabin feel to their home, they had heard horror stories about using the typical log siding.  Mark was able to give them that same look and feel while using cedar and other materials that would hold up to the elements and remain low maintenance.    The exterior of the home is beautifully landscaped, with a resort worthy pool, a...

Imery Group Builds DOE Zero Energy Ready Home

What would it be like to never pay a power bill again? Mark Kuntz, chief operating officer, Mitsubishi Electric Trane HVAC US, is well on his way to finding out. With a passion for high-performance building, Kuntz decided to put his knowledge to the test after buying an 11-acre property in Monroe, Georgia. Looking to build a home that would consume zero energy, incur no debt and utilize long-lasting materials, Kuntz set his sights on designing a DOE Zero Energy Ready Home.   Harbin customer, custom home builder and energy rater, Imery Group, was selected for the job. Imery Group has been installing Mitsubishi Electric HVAC equipment since 2011 and is dedicated to the green building movement. “Everything we do as a company focuses on value and quality. Not only the economic value of a high-performance building but the social and environmental values to the greater community as well,” said Luis Imery, owner, Imery Group. After assessing Kuntz’s goals and the property, the team set their sights on building a DOE Zero Energy Ready Home. “This home recognition essentially means that we maximized our efforts and did everything we could to make the house as healthy and energy efficient as possible, prior to the incorporation of renewable energy,” explained Imery. With these criteria in mind, the project team planned the thermal envelope and mechanical system design for the 1,863-square-foot, two-story home.   “For a home like this, you always start with the building envelope: the exterior walls, the roof and the foundation...

3D Virtual Tours of Homes Increasing in Popularity Among Builders

Use of 3D virtual home tours is increasing in popularity among new home builders, based on observations by the Harbin Lumber team.  Over the last couple of years 3D virtual home tours have been used frequently among real estate agents, but home builders are seeing the benefits in the newer technologies as well. Harbin Lumber customer Tomorrow’s Homes shared an example of one of their 3D Virtual home tours, created by TURNPRO Media.  We are having far too much fun navigating around the rooms and checking out the different views of this four bedroom, three bath home in Elberton, Georgia. Click on the image below to take the tour (best viewed on a smartphone, in Google Chrome and other options seen here).  There are multiple views available, including  dollhouse, floor plan, and viewpoints from each room.  What a great way for home builders to showcase their work!  We will always love photos and video as well, but being able to virtually “walk around” and check out all the beautiful features of the home is impressive.  Thanks for sharing the tour with us, Tomorrow’s Homes! ...

YellaWood Hosts Harbin Hunters

Customers and employees from Harbin’s Lavonia, Eatonton and Athens locations were recently treated to a quail hunting experience, compliments of Great Southern Wood Preserving, a.k.a. YellaWood.           The prospective hunters began their trip with a tour of the Great Southern Headquarters in Abbeville, Alabama.  They learned the process that goes into transforming a raw pine board into a piece of building material that can withstand the elements over time. Following that, the groups attended a sport clay shoot, where they worked on their shooting skills.      After some delicious meals and some tall tales, the men headed out on the quail hunt, accompanied by some of the finest hunting assistants on four legs. The bird dogs and men canvassed the pines and fields looking for coveys of quail to flush. At the end of the hunt, participants were given their bounty – cleaned and frozen birds to take home for their families.   Our thanks to Great Southern for providing this great experience for our customers and team. ...
