STAR Employee Spotlight: Shelly Walters

Before joining Harbin’s Door Shop, Shelly Walters had never used a tape measure, worked with wood or had any knowledge of the building industry.  But Shelly is resourceful, determined, has a positive mindset, and is a quick study…and at Harbin, that’s all she needed to hit the ground running.  To train for her role in Inside Sales at the Door Shop, she spent time with each department learning how casing is attached to the jams, how to run a door slab through the machine for the hinge preps, how to attach casings together, and the different combinations available to make a door have the look and functionality a customer wants. “What surprised me the most about building a door is how the measurements have to be so exact,” she said. “The production team has to be on their toes and thinking the entire time in order to be absolutely precise or else the door doesn’t work properly.  Just 1/8” off on a hinge placement can ruin the whole door.”   Shelly has proven to have that ideal combination of great attitude, quick thinking and dedication to excellent customer service in order to successfully work with a wide range of internal customers at the varied Harbin locations.  She loves to be given a project that she can handle from start to finish, researching all the possible options, finding out how long it will take to get it, comparing costs, and all the little things that go in to making the perfect door for...

STAR Employee Spotlight: Wallace Riden

Wallace Riden is currently shining in his role as a Class B driver for Harbin Lumber of Athens, but he didn’t start in that position. Wallace was hired August 1, 2017 as a yard and warehouse operator. He had no experience in the building industry, but he came in with a great attitude.  During orientation, he showed a glimpse of what was to come with his inquisitiveness and participation.  Sure enough, he worked hard at his job, showing determination, confidence and humility. Seven months after he started, he was ready to move up. He received his medical card and became a non CDL driver, and eight months later he earned his Class B learner’s permit. When the time arrived to go for his CDL exam, Wallace was warned that it was tough and that most people don’t pass the first time.  But Wallace did pass. “I thought they failed everyone the first time just to get your attention,” said Todd Lord, Harbin Lumber of Athens General Manager. “Wallace is the first person I’ve ever known to pass the CDL test the first time.”   Wallace’s story is a good example about someone starting out on the ground level and working hard with a good attitude and achieving something great. “Throughout Wallace’s tenure here he’s always had the right attitude – however you define it, it’s him.  He wants to do the right thing and is literally someone who came in with no experience in our industry, took...

YellaWood Hosts Harbin Hunters

Customers and employees from Harbin’s Lavonia, Eatonton and Athens locations were recently treated to a quail hunting experience, compliments of Great Southern Wood Preserving, a.k.a. YellaWood.           The prospective hunters began their trip with a tour of the Great Southern Headquarters in Abbeville, Alabama.  They learned the process that goes into transforming a raw pine board into a piece of building material that can withstand the elements over time. Following that, the groups attended a sport clay shoot, where they worked on their shooting skills.      After some delicious meals and some tall tales, the men headed out on the quail hunt, accompanied by some of the finest hunting assistants on four legs. The bird dogs and men canvassed the pines and fields looking for coveys of quail to flush. At the end of the hunt, participants were given their bounty – cleaned and frozen birds to take home for their families.   Our thanks to Great Southern for providing this great experience for our customers and team. ...

Another Harbin Lumber team member also received recognition.  Todd Lord, Harbin Lumber of Athens General Manager, was presented with the AAHBA 2018 Henry E. Wages of E & W Air Conditioning.   “This year’s winner of the Henry E. Wages Associate of the Year Award has been a dedicated member of our Association for many years,” said Stephanie Johnson, Executive Officer of AAHBA.  “Todd Lord has contributed much time and energy to the AAHBA and has proven to be a member we can always call upon. His contributions and service to not just this association but the building industry have positively affected many! The Good in Goodbye

Cody Green first joined Harbin Lumber of Athens when he was a student at Athens Technical College, working at the store part time to help work his way through school. Graduating with a degree in information technology, he considered the prospect of pursuing a career in his field, but enjoyed Harbin so much he instead chose to join the Athens store as an Inside Sales Representative. He has been with Harbin off and on for nearly 7 years, and has been very dedicated to his job.  But his dedication to his family is even more commendable.  Cody is very close to his grandfather, who lives in Texas and is embracing his post-retirement life.  Cody has decided to move to Texas in order to spend time with his elder.   We will miss you, Cody.  We wish you much joy with your grandfather, and all the best in your next chapter.  ...
